gafreak
I would love to see the return of the buffet, I love eating here at Grannys, I always thought their food tasted better for some reason.
CablesEric
Great Spotlight, as usual! What years was the Granny character at the restaurant? The real person, not the Loony Tunes Granny.
29yrswithaGApass
What years was the Granny character at the restaurant? The real person, not the Loony Tunes Granny. Granny was a hostess from about 1994 to 1996.
The Master
Nice spotlight, I remember Granny in the rocking chair. One side of Gingerbread Fancy was used as a boarding area for the Hayride for a few years and one year the porch had animatronic skeletons for a little preshow that you watched while waiting in the queue. TombraiderTy
Interesting spotlight on an interesting building. Even after reading dozens of these spotlights, I'm still amazed by how much information and how many photos each of them provides. They all make me want to visit the park even more
Thunderbolt
I've always liked the look and lights of "Gingerbread Fancy". In an area of the park that seems engulfed in darkness (or worse, xenon lighting), it stands out and commands my attention with its incandescent beauty. As for the buffet, they can keep it. That food isn't worth $14, or even $8. It's a shame this facility is wasted serving sub-par pedestrian food. I'd sooner take the trip to KFC on 537 even if the prices were higher. Great Adventure desperately needs a table service restaurant, and this facility would be a perfect test bed. Sadly, the food service department is either not equipped to furnish such an operation, or lacks the leadership initiative to try. A well run, table service facility served with HIGH QUALITY food (even at a further premium price) is a potential gold mine. Sadly, nobody running Six Flags (including the Premier Parks people I so adore to the annoyance of many here*) has tried this at the park. (Said partially tongue-in-cheek, hoping people find some self-deprecating humor and not interpreting it as an insult to anyone) I should add I always love the GAH Spotlights (including this one). This site never disappoints. Edited December 2, 2009 by Thunderbolt
ThemeParkRider
I must say that if there is one building that stayed mostly the same since 1974 this would be the one.
CablesEric
Granny was a hostess from about 1994 to 1996. Thank You, I knew I remembered seeing and talking to her while working at the park.
ThemeParkRider
What about the Granny Character? I might remember her from going there as a toddler... Otherwise she probably was just at the seaport or something.
Railer
I would like to see some new "LED" lighting on this as well. With all those bulbs it has to use alot of electric with standard bulbs. Nice Spotlight as always.
gafreak
LED lights would be a great upgrade for that bldg, its one of my favorite structures in the park too, As a kid thats where my family always went to eat and i have alot of good memories there! 29yrswithaGApass
When Gingerbread Fancy was rethemed to Granny's in the early 1990's, serious consideration was given to turn the restaurant into a table service facility. scipiomask
You didn't mention the disgusting smell in the restaurant - what is that smell? It smells like cleaning fluid, but I'm not sure. My friend's father who's worked at the park since it opened said that it's always smelled like that.
29yrswithaGApass
I know it doesn't smell like gingerbread!
scipiomask
^yeah. They really need to fix that - it's really unappetizing. My mother refuses to buy any food there because of the smell.

scipiomask
I don't know if you guys noticed, but they had the outside lights on! It looked REALLY great. I almost ate there - but as soon as I walked in, I took one whiff and walked out. The food smelled pretty good, but nothing else did. scipiomask
I walked into Granny's today, and the weird odor was gone! Now I might actually get to eat there!
29yrswithaGApass
This reminds me of the Crystal Palace at the Magic Kingdom.
FlumeOp1974
Agree! Ive always thought more of a cross over between that and The Crystal Room at Tavern on the Green. And Do do wish that would make it over into a full service sit down. the room is there in the back they built enough space for a full service kitchen.. dougdrummer
Just curious why GA never thought it was worth trying a full sit-down restaurant. And I assume the dining pass could not be used if they did convert to this format. I'd estimate the cost for a family of four would be in the order of $100 to eat dinner there. So I would think the profit margin would be significant. Do they not have the type of trained staff to work and manage a sit-down restaurant? GAcoaster
I think it's one of those things they just never found there was a market for at the park. Even from the beginning Warner LeRoy saw it more of a take-out picnic thing than a sit down experience. He did a Tavern on the Green Picnic food truck back in the 1970's:

I think a big issue right now is that they don't have enough staff. They can't even staff the food locations they have now. (And it's not because they cut staffing, they literally can't find enough employees)
