Disney World adding 2000 hotel rooms with Art of Animation value resort: Lots of suites & theming

While Walt Disney World has already begun construction on the new Fantasyland project announced last September, they apparently have a little more magic up their sleeve.

Last night, the Orlando Sentinel broke news about a new Disney value resort set to open in 2012. The resort will join Pop Century and the All-Star resorts in Disney's family of 'value' resorts and will be built adjacent to the Pop Century Resort.

The new hotel, Disney's Art of Animation Resort, will create nearly 2,000 new units, including 1,120 family suites and 864 themed rooms. According to the Orlando Sentinel report, the popularity of the All-Star suites helped lead to the creation of the new hotel's plans for so many family suites.

The suites will be built in three different wings themed after The Lion King, Cars, and Finding Nemo. The rooms will be in a fourth wing, this one themed after the Disney classic, The Little Mermaid.

The new resort will be nestled on a 65-acre area near the Pop Century Resort and will allow Disney to utilize a group of buildings that the company abandoned in 2001. Originally, the buildings were supposed to serve as a 'phase two' for the Pop Century Resort.

Disney's Art of Animation Resort will join the Walt Disney World family as the 26th resort hotel on property, providing a fifth option for those families looking to vacation on a budget.

As for the design, each section of the hotel is expected to include large icons from their respective movies in the courtyard and sport bright and vibrant colors, much like Pop Century. These icons will go along with the themed rooms, lobby, shopping, and eating areas in the resort.

While the 2,000 extra rooms are a big benefit to Disney, the project will also create nearly 800 jobs immediately, greatly helping the area's struggling economy.

Disney's Art of Aniumation Resort Unveiled

posted on May 12th, 2010 by Thomas Smith, Social Media Director, Disney Parks

Big news…we've just announced plans for a new resort at Walt Disney World Resort that'll bring to life some of our most beloved characters and stories. Disney's Art of Animation Resort will be one-of-a-kind, featuring family suites designed around four themes: The Lion King, Cars, Finding Nemo and The Little Mermaid.

It's a resort designed with families in mind. There will be amazing sights at the different themed wings of the resort, including a model of King Triton that'll eventually be 35 feet tall and tower over guests. And Disney's Art of Animation Resort will also have themed room interiors in its nearly 2,000 new units — 1,120 family suites in The Lion King, Cars and Finding Nemo wings and 864 themed rooms in The Little Mermaid wings. Suites will have both a living room and a bedroom, offering added space.

All of the themed suites and rooms at Disney's Art of Animation Resort (to be located adjacent to Disney's Pop Century Resort) are expected to open by the end of 2012. We'll have more updates in the future but wanted to share this with you first. Please let us know what you think in the comments.

It is disappointing that they aren't going to finish the construction of the Legendary Years (1900-1940) of the Pop Century Resort that was put on hold after 9/11, and use the buildings instead for the new Art Resort.

I guess it will just be the Pop 1/2 Century Resort now. It was kind if creepy seeing those half built shells just sitting there for almost ten years across the Generation Gap Bridge which connected them with the finished sections.

It would have been nice to see the Legendary Years built. There could have been some cool ideas, I know near the buildings was some retro looking rocketship and they could have had Snow White, Bambi, Dumbo, Steamboat Willie for the 20's, 30's and 40's.

I just hope they don't change over the current Pop Century to become part of the Art of Animation resort since Pop Century is my favorite Disney resort that I have stayed at. I really liked all the display boxes in the lobby with stuff from each decade and staying in the 80's section with Pacman ghosts all over the place was also cool to see.
