29yrswithaGApass
Out of all the Spotligths we have done to date, this one gives readers the best sense of what it was like to be in the park during its earliest years. Thanks to our member Csogi, Steve has provided us with an incredible collection of in park photos featuring the Enchanted Forest's earliest street entertainment. I would encourage everyone to read through the "book" and read Steve's story - the vast majority of text are Steve's own words. He has a great tale to tell, and the photos are equally entertaining. Watch for similar albums for 1976, 1977, and 1978 soon!
29yrswithaGApass
This thing would freak me out if he popped out at me! It looks like the photo may have been taken somewhere in the Woodland Gardens next to the Yum Yum Palace. Steve, is it possible he "entertained" the guests waiting for the shows in the Aqua Spectacle?
Csogi
This was taken back by the clown trailer. Since it was at the beginning of the season (and we were rookies) we did not roam much past Dream Street.
Bubbles
Great job on the book, Steve! It's fun to see some of the characters before I was there (1976-1984). I'm looking forward to visiting the park with some old clown friends on 8/25/10. Hope others join Sandi David, Robin Taylor and me!
29yrswithaGApass
Steve, if I am not mistaken, didn't you mention that the juggler in your photo captioned "Penn" is actually Penn Jillette of Penn & Teller fame?
Csogi
Yes, that's correct. Before the 1975 season was over, Penn and Teller started to work together (with a third person) as the the Asparagus Valley Cultural Society.
GAcoaster
I just saw this in a GREAT album up on Facebook from Sue Jurecki...
Csogi
That's Sue as Little Red Riding Hood. As you can see, we were not shy about climbing and hanging on anything in site. I wonder how that changed over time?
29yrswithaGApass
Were you guys restricted to certain areas or could you wonder the park? For instance, I don't think I have ever seen photos of the characters in the Best of the West section of the park.
Csogi
For the most part, we worked Dream Street (from the new entrance to the fountain to the original entrance to Kiddie Kingdom). It changed when we had to work the parade. You needed to get to the start of the parade (Gingerbread Fancy) and then back after the parade ended at the Great Arena. Some would go off to other areas of the park, but that made it difficult for the supervisors (not that a clown would slack off). We would start the day outside the front gate, keeping the crowd busy before the park opened. You might find pictures of Street Characters in other areas of the park towards the end of the season. The crowds were so much smaller that you had to do something to keep busy.
29yrswithaGApass
The 1976, 1977, and 1978 character albums are all in the works! Watch for these new Spotlights over the next several weeks!
29yrswithaGApass
Even though most of the characters hung out on Dream Street there aren't any photos of the clowns or characters in the Garden of Marvels. Was that area considered a true "attraction" and off-limits?
Csogi
That was off limits. I think that our supervisors (which there were 2) always wanted to find us quickly / easily. Nothing like a bunch of clowns running amok in the park!
29yrswithaGApass
Looking through all the photos of the park's earliest characters and street entertainment it is amazing to see the wide variety of performers - clowns, fairy tales, nursery rhymes, super heroes, animals, GA-exclusive characters, etc. Was there any rhyme or reason as to which characters were used at the park or was it simply a potpourri of ideas? Csogi
I believe that the goal was to make fantasies come alive (since we were initially limited to Dream Street). Staying in character while on the street was big. A good example was Alice in Wonderland. She looked the part, spoke the part and no one could get her out of character. 29yrswithaGApass
I know what you are saying from a personal character/guest experience. I was wondering how the park decided which costumes to make and use in the park. It seems they went in multiple approaches with some animal characters (ape, tiger), some fairy tales (Alice in Wonderland, Mother Goose), some super heroes (Spiderman, Ms Marvel), some monsters (Hunchback, Dracula), etc.
Csogi
That I cannot help you with. We would need to get that from the managers who did the hiring.
