29yrswithaGApass
I am compiling information and photos for a GAH feature on the park's costumed street characters Does anyone have photos of Pierer Le Pup, the Drake's Duck, or the Casey Baseball characters? These could all could be found at Great Adventure in the early 1980's
29yrswithaGApass
For several of the characters in the Costumed Characters Collection we have been fortunate to receive the "official" back stories. As and example, here is the one for Maurice Le Rat:MAURICE LE RAT is a very artsy French rat. Since he is French, he talks in a French accent. He talks as if he is an authority on art and painting, something of a braggart. He informs guests of all the structures he has painted in the park, things like the Super Teepee, the Carousel, the Big Wheel, and the Great Arena. Then to show his artistic taste he sizes things up with his thumb and continues to explain how he could make something look better. He is attracted to all sorts of colors, possibly picking out a guest who is wearing a favorite color of his. Click through the gallery and check them out! Csogi
Nice job setting up this collection. It's fun seeing the variations for the characters.
29yrswithaGApass
We set up these photos in our galleries instead of posting them to a web page (ala a Spotlight) so that viewers can add comments (and other photos) to the picture albums. We are hoping that some of the folks in those costumes will see these and add their memories to the collection. So if you can round up any of the "old gang" Steve, we would love to have them join us! 29yrswithaGApass
We still need to add all of our clown photos to this collection but check out the wonderful photo that was submitted to us in our Photo Drop! So cool!
29yrswithaGApass
It is easy to think that the Shirt Tales were just a bunch a characters that didn't last long at the park and hardly had an impact on Great Adventure. The truth, however, is that the Shirt Tales caused the discontinuation of all the unique characters that were such an interesting backstory for the park. Sadly, once the Shirt Tales moved in, all the other costumed body puppet characters were eliminated.

Csogi
Nice addition, many faces that I have not thought about in years. Who remembered that people wore overalls in the 70's!
29yrswithaGApass
Do you know where these photos where taken? It looks like it may have been some sort of restaurant or banquet facility.
Csogi
It could have been Mom's Peppermill restaurant in Hightstown.

29yrswithaGApass
Question answered! This is Steve in the clown and body puppet dressing area during the 1982 season. You can see some costumes in the background and Casey Baseball too. Anyone know what character's head is on the floor in the background? Is that possibly Casey Baseball? 29yrswithaGApass
No band or town name is mentioned on the originals but below is a closeup of their flag which is the only hint. The band was being filmed for footage that was used in a fall 1976 park commercial which we don't have in our collection.

29yrswithaGApass
I was given the pages below from a vintage kids' fashion photo shoot at Great Adventure. I don't know what magazine it was in (I would think McCall's) or the date of the issue. If anyone can figure it out please let us know. There may be additional pages to the article. A few cool things from this article: - This is one of the few color photos I have seen of the giant rabbit. - It seems there was also a giant squirrel character! - The photo of the girls on the swings is scary for two reasons - 1. the swings before seat belts looks scary especially for kids, and 2. the clown behind them is really scary!
