1973-12-20 Safari Security.jpg

The safety of residents in the areas bordering Great Adventure's safari park property, as well as guests visiting the safari after its opening, were of great concern to both Harwicke's management team and the general public.  In this article, security features like fencing, safari wardens, and housing of the animals were all addressed by the company.  Unfortunately, in the second article, we learn that a restraining order placed on Hardwicke  by a county judge would temporarily pause construction on The Enchanted Forest park.  This would be just one of the many legal obstacles initiated by the former land owner, (the Switlik family) that Hardwicke would have to overcome to get the complex open by July 1974.

It’s interesting to read that the lockout gates between Safari sections were only going to handle three or four cars at a time. I remember the two sets of lockouts were three lanes wide and probably held about 45 cars at a time.
