Something most people don't realize is that the loss of trees is almost as much Warner LeRoy's fault as anyone's. While they did an amazing job saving trees when the park was built, many of the trees that were preserved died off because the paving was done too close to the tree trunks so they could no longer get enough rain water. They never had any irrigation system for them. In recent years irrigation systems have been added throughout the park which made a big difference in the care of the plantings. It used to be that the only irrigation was from pipes around the park which would get sprinkler heads attached to them every morning before the park opened which was time consuming and ended up watering only sections of the planting beds with a lot of wasted water going down the drains and the trees getting nothing.
