The unusually cold temps and early freeze watch tonight is really going to hurt the poor people still without power and heat. Temps won't even get back to normal until next weekend and forecasters are calling for a another storm min week.

Neil (gafreak) use of "dark ages" and "very long week" are excellent choices of words to describe the last week or so. We just got our electric back today - thank God for electricity. No matter how many times I hit light switches on in my house over the last seven days, they never came on. It's remarkable how trained you become in normal life and how hard those habits are to change. By the way, Happy Halloween everyone. It is strange to have trick-or-treaters ringing the doorbell on November 5th!

It is trying times like these that really does bring out the good in people- neighbors banning together, helping each other, and just a lot of goodwill. From a home standpoint, I was lucky and just suffered external damage - missing shingles, shutters, trees, etc. My dad's house at the shore wasn't as lucky as we just finished gutting it down to the 2x4's inside because of flood damage. His boat also was missing from the local marina, as the pictures below illustrate.

Before the storm, the winds started to pick up as we prepared for landfall.

The winds kept getting stronger... during the height of the storm we stayed away from the windows. During several gusts the house was moving.

The marina where my dad kept his boat was destroyed...

The marina buildings were damaged and some gone.

Several boats were jammed into the NJ Transit railroad bridge.

Prior to the storm, this lot was full of boats stored on land.

The entire dock that had his boat was MIA.

Further down from the marina, the North Jersey Coastline branch of NJT had its rails up-routed. This was the main line track, not some unused spur.

And a barge used to work on the Morgan Creek bridge broke loose and floated ashore.

Unlike so many others, there was a semi-happy ending for my dad. His boat somehow managed to break away, travel out of the marina, go out under the bridge and out into Raritan Bay. It ended up washing up on the shore two towns up the coast were it pulled into the beach. During its trip, it floated behind my house at one point in the dark at the height of the storm. Just one small part of the craziness of the Hurricane Sandy and the last wild week.

It is really cold tonight, much colder than normal for this time of the year. I feel sorry for all those people who will have to tough it out with no heat. A real 1,2,3 punch, first Sandy, then a week of well below normal temps and premature freezes, and now another storm, which is at least weaker than Sandy was.

Great now this freak nor easter is going to dump 3 in of early snow. It used to be snow before Dec was very rare, now it's normal. I guess the area is becoming colder and winter coming sooner every year from now on.

I took a ride past Keansburg Amusement Park earlier today and it was so depressing seeing everything destroyed. Buildings were washed away, all the old time kiddie rides in pieces, the water slide towers with the fiberglass tubes missing, and pieces of hundreds of video games, skeeball machines, and classic games all stacked up for trash. :(

It's a shame how much damaged was caused by Hurricane Sandy. I was at Seaside Heights a few months before it was destroyed. What I found very devastating was the loss of their Musik Express. The Musik Express there had everything! Sirens, bubbles, modern music, it went backwards, amazing backdrop! I saw a picture a few months ago of one of the cars washed up on shore. First Great Adventure's, then Casino Pier's, how devastating! Two perfect Musik Expresses gone within a few years! :(
