Making a splash

MOUNT LAUREL — A new water theme park slated to open in the fall promises to bring year-round tropical temperatures to New Jersey.

“What we're aiming to do is bring the Caribbean and the Florida Keys here to New Jersey in the midst of winter,” said Robin Kirk, vice president of Sage Hospitality Resources. “We want to attract visitors on the coldest of days.”

Construction has already begun on the CoCo Key Water Resort, a 55,000-square-foot indoor water park to be situated on Route 73 next to the Mount Laurel Marriott hotel.

Hotel and water park officials were on hand for a groundbreaking ceremony yesterday at the future site of the park.

Kirk said the resort would be the first in New Jersey. Sage Hospitality owns the hotel and manages CoCo Key resorts at six locations across the country.

The water park will feature water slides, pools, hot tubs, arcades, snack bars and a tropical motif. It also will have a “dip-in theater” in which patrons can watch a movie projected onto the sail of a large ship while they swim in one of the park's pools.

Private party rooms and a bar area also are planned.

The facility will be open to the public year-round. A day pass to the park will cost $20 per person and the park also will sell weekend passes. Admission is free for children under 2 years old.

“It takes a whole corner of New Jersey and revitalizes it,” Kirk said. “We're adding investment, we're adding jobs and we're adding fun.”

Kirk said Sage Hospitality Resources is financing the $25 million project. The water resort will be staffed by up to 100 full-time employees.

“It gives Mount Laurel families another destination to go to with their families,” Township Councilman Jim Keenan said. “I think it will be a great asset to the Mount Laurel residents, the businesses and the surrounding community.”
