Safari Guest Code of Conduct

Recommended Posts

Last season Great Adventure posted, promoted, and heavily enforced a brand new Wild Safari Guest Code of Conduct. In my opinion, this is one of the best things the park has done.

It is pretty simple:

1. Do not feed or touch the animals.

2. No smoking or littering.

3. Do not exit your vehicle or roll windows down.

4. Speed limit 12mph.

5. Remain on the roadway- animals have the right of way.

Amazingly the park had to escort several vehichles from the park each day for not following these commonsense rules. But as we know, a lot of our guests lack commonsense- like this guy with a video camera touring the safari in a limo several years ago. Last year he would have been quickly shown the exit!

This past year we actually got stuck behind a Minivan who kept on throwing food out of their windows every time an animal would approach them until we finally got tired of watching it and alerted safari personel. It's really a good thing for them to be strictly enforcing the code of conduct, because even a person who thinks they are doing good by feeding and animal means no harm, the last thing those animals need is interference with the upkeep that is already so vital to them. I found the new code extremely easy to follow with and I think it is definately all for teh best.

Sadly I have seen crazy crap lik that picture going on for years in the Safari. For too long the park had not enforced rules very well if at all but I am glad they are cracking down. One thing I really hate is when speed demons go though the Safari.

True about the speed demons. I have actually had someone behind me flashing their lights at me because I was going too slow for them. Once they found an opening they like flew through the section we were in. At that point why even be in the safari because you clearly don't have any desire to stop and admire the animals.

That car would be a collectors item now. Just shows there have always been plenty of jackasses that don't follow the rules for everyone's safety.

Those people probably were not smart enough to take the baboon bypass road. Years ago a friend of my mother's drove though the baboon section and a baboon ripped the sideview mirror off of the door of the car and ran off with it!

When the park first opened in 1974 there was no bypass road so guests were forced to ride through. It wasn't added until 1975 due to the amount of complaints from guests.

These pictures are from 1979 and I agree by the looks of them they don't appear to have been too smart! Snack time for the monkeys!

Actually, there is now a sixth rule in the code of conduct for the Safari. As per the Six Flags Wild Safari Park site, leave Rover and Fluffy at home.

In order to ensure the health and safety of our animals, we require all our guests to comply with our Guest Code Of Conduct:

1. Do NOT feed or touch the animals

2. NO smoking or littering

3. Do NOT exit your vehicle or roll down windows

4. Speed limit 12 MPH

5. Remain on roadway — animals have right of way

6. Pets are not allowed in any Six Flags Park

The new rules is pretty smart as we all know animals sometimes don't like other animals. All we need is for someone's dog to start barking up a storm and either frighten animals or cause some other problems. Besides everyone knows no pets can be brought into the main park so why even bring them to the complex in the first place.

Has anyone been through the place recently. We haven't managed to take our ride through, but I think we are going to do that like midday during thecoaster celebration event if we can so that we don't miss out on our ERT in the morning!. I can't wait as I really enjoy being in there, and when riding Medusa I'm more transfixed sometimes looking into the place than the ride. Hopefully everyone is adering to the conduct rules this year!

I guess it is no surprise and there are always going to be people who think they are dong something harmless when they feed the animals. The Speed demons are bad thorugh because not only can they hit someone but could kill and animal in the process which is totally uncalled for. In all honesty anyone caught speeding through there should not only be kicked out but should also be able to be summonsed for it so they think about it twice.

The first two years of the park, it was so busy that just keeping the traffic flow going was a problem. The road was three lanes and I allowed the people to park in the outside lanes but kept announcing with my loudhailer on my truck to keep the middle lane going. Plus alot of cars actually vaporlocked and overheated. I spent most of the day hauling water to the cars broken down , that and pushing them out to the front entrance to be repaired. The ostriches did cause alot of problems also because they would walk in front of cars and stop traffic. On really busy days I had my crew from the elephant barn come down into the section to keep the ostriches off the roads so the cars could move. We would actually stop traffic all the way to the ticket booths and the bosses would bitch that they couldn't sell tickets because the cars were not moving. Everyonce in awhile during a rainstorm the rhinos would play and push each other around and more than a few times they would dent cars pretty good. I always had a man on foot with the elephants to keep them off the road and not tear up the cars.

i really think that this post should be in grinds my gears.. but im am going to say it here because it involves the safari. My dad and i went to the safari on opening day and just driving through and we get to the giraffes; this stupid guy opens all of his windows and his sunroof feeding them freeking mcdonalds!! HELLO?!?!?!!? if your windows are down all the way and the giraffe is near the freeking kid?? i would put the windows up.. but no not this guy.. he was laughing up a storm thinking it was the greatest thing that 4 giraffes were at his car and one of the giraffes heads was in the car... I don't know but safari has signs everywhere saying "

Do NOT Feed The Animals" and "KEEP Your Windows UP!!! Not down!!!

okay continue lol

Goofiest person I ever had to deal with during the first two years was a guy that got out of his car in my section, (elephant/rhino) with a karate gee on and was attempting to want to fight one of my ostriches. Well I had a really tough and mean male named Cassinova that would run at you and he would try to kill you. Well this dude gets out and starts making his moves and Cassinova heads towards him. I drive my truck inbetween them and the guy starts cussing me for not letting him fight the bird. I called for backup to Lion 1 , Butch Dring and anyother Warden because this guy wants to fight anyone or anything. Finally got him back in his car and he drove off, with an escort of Safari trucks in front and back of him. I should of let Cassinova kick his ass, but I would of been held responsible for his killin!

I've got to say, as much as I like the idea of the Code of Conduct, I haven't seen it enforced at all. On Saturday the majority of cars had windows open, and I even saw one guy throw food out of his at the ostrich. Had he closed his window any slower I think it would have pecked his daughter right in the face. Last year I also saw similar things all of the time, and only once did a warden do anything about it. Too bad.

It is a good idea, and in all reality anyone who can't abide by it just is an idiot. The policy, while seemingly never enforced, also shows a lot baout soe people's character when they intentiaonally break the rules that are clearly given to them before they enter the gate surrounding the Safari Park. I will say though that I found it interesting, I had some pollen and junk on ym car from a tree I parked under at my house still stick in the grating by my hood, and the Safari employees actually took a minute to check out what exaclty it was and ask me about it before heading into the Safari. So they are tyring to make sure the animals aren't harmed, I just think sometimes there is too much for them to do with the animals to see a lot that happens.

For some reason my mom (yes I'm an early teen) decided to open up her window while we were driving through the white-tailed section. She wanted my sister to get a better view of the deer so she could film it! The stupid part is, though, that she was scared as hell when a deer walked by us when our windows were closed.

The first two years we were very concerned about how the people would act around the animals. Plus we had so many inexperienced Wardens that had never worked in a Safari Park before..also the majority of animals were interested in the cars too. The Lions, Bears, Leopards (at first) Tigers and baboons were all loose in their sections and free to get close to the cars and trucks. The big cats, such as lions and tigers were not encouraged to get too close because they would bite out tires that smelled of dog piss. Now most animals are behind hot wires or in enclosures where the whole effect of the Safari is lost in my opinion.
