Six Flags Great Adventure Launches

New Animal Outreach Programs

‘Wild Encounters’ Brings the Safari Indoors

JACKSON, N.J. ─ February 1, 2018 ─ Six Flags Great Adventure will unveil new animal outreach programs that brings the thrill of the safari into classrooms, senior centers, after school programs, clubs and more. “Wild Encounters” will offer three program options that teach about animals’ characteristics, habitats, history and diets while showcasing live exotic animals and their expert caretakers.

“Wild Encounters allows us to bring the fun, excitement and educational aspects of the safari to animal lovers, wherever they are,” said Dr. Bill Rives, director and chief veterinarian of Six Flags Great Adventure’s safari and animal education programs.

Animal educators will present a variety of exotic birds, reptiles, snakes and mammals. Participants will catch an up-close glimpse of animals such as a two-toed sloth, Moluccan cockatoo and blue-tongued skink, and even touch animals like the black and white tegu and red-tailed boa constrictor. Lesson plans are developed by Six Flags’ state-certified teacher and correspond with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards.

Programs include:

  1. Fur, Feathers and Scales – Focuses on the differences among reptiles, mammals and birds. Perfect for grades K through 5.
  2. Behind the Biology – Focuses on the importance of animal training through positive reinforcement and its role in animal care. Perfect for grades 6 through 8.
  3. Customized – Six Flags will design a program to fit specific needs or criteria.

The 45-minute program is best for groups up to 100, and multiple programs can be completed in succession. Inquiries for Wild Encounters can be directed to the Six Flags Safari Programs team at 732-928-2000 ext. 2221 or by emailing safariprograms@sixflags.com

I like how it's not just for schools with the senior centers and clubs mentioned. I remember always looking forward to a similar type of programming from the local wildlife center in elementary school where they would visit once or twice a year and bring animals into the classroom.
