Theme Park Challenges Guests to Ride 80-mph Roller Coaster in Tank Tops, Shorts in Frigid Winter Temperatures to Benefit Special Olympics New Jersey

 

Jackson, NJ — November 19, 2019 — On the heels of the notorious Coffin Challenge, Six Flags Great Adventure announces its next zany event -- the Polar Coaster Challenge. Named after the meteorological term for dramatically fluctuating temperatures expected for this winter, the Polar Coaster Challenge dares guests to ride the 230-foot-tall Nitro roller coaster wearing just tank tops and shorts in frigid temperatures Dec. 7 at noon.

 

To participate in the Polar Coaster Challenge, participants must:

• Reach the height requirement of 54 inches to ride Nitro;
• Wear a tank top or T-shirt (sleeves must be elbow length or shorter), and shorts (to the knee or shorter);
• Wear closed-toed shoes; and
• Sign a photo and video release form and a safety waiver. Anyone under 18 years of age will require a parent or legal guardian signature.
• Gloves and hats may be worn. Hats must be secured. No loose articles are permitted on the ride.

 

NJ101.5’s Chief Meteorologist Dan Zarrow will be on site at Six Flags to celebrate the polar coaster as guests board Nitro to face the winds of winter at speeds up to 80 mph.

 

The theme park has partnered with Special Olympics New Jersey to host the event, kicking off the plunge season, which includes their popular Polar Bear Plunges at Wildwood in January and Seaside Heights in February of 2020. The Polar Coaster Challenge is free with theme park admission, Membership and Season Pass. Discounted admission tickets are available on sixflags.com using the promo code “polar” and $2 from every admission ticket will be donated to Special Olympics New Jersey.

 

Preregistration is not required. Event check in takes place at 11 a.m., and the event begins at 12 p.m. A group photo will be taken at 12:45 p.m., and the theme park opens to the public at 1 p.m. For more information and to purchase tickets, go online to sixflags.com/greatadventure.

 

The Polar Coaster Challenge is part of Holiday in the Park, Six Flags’ annual festival which transforms the theme park into a winter wonderland with more than a million glittering lights, festive food and holiday entertainment in addition to its world-class thrill rides. I like how Six Flags can not only run Nitro and other coasters in really cold weather and then promote a challenge about riding the coaster in the cold when other park chains wouldn't even consider running a B&M Hyper in December unless the park was in an area with warm weather.

Jackson, NJ — December 7, 2019 — Thrill seekers from nine different states and Canada flocked to Six Flags Great Adventure today for the park’s first Polar Coaster Challenge. Named after the meteorological term for dramatically fluctuating temperatures expected for this winter, the Polar Coaster Challenge dared guests to ride the 80-pmh, 230-foot-tall Nitro roller coaster wearing summer attire in frigid winter temperatures to benefit Special Olympics New Jersey.

 

Energy ran high as 348 guests – the youngest age 8 and the oldest age 65 – chanted “Nitro” then climbed aboard the chart-topping roller coaster in shorts and T-shirts to brave the chill. Meteorologist Dan Zarrow, who also participated in the challenge, calculated the feels-like temperature on Nitro – a bone-chilling 17 degrees.
