From WPVI Channel 6:

SEASIDE HEIGHTS, N.J. - July 13, 2008 (WPVI) -- A South Jersey roller coaster was the scene of an accident Sunday night.

An official with Casino Pier in Seaside Heights says that an employee was struck and injured by the Star Jet coaster at around 7:00.

The 21-year-old employee was apparently trying to retrieve a hat in a restricted area.

We have no information on the injured man's condition.

The ride seemed to be working fine.

Seaside Heights Police are investigating the circumstances of the accident.

OK, after a FATAL accident which was all over the news every ride employee should be on their guard and know enough not to enter a restricted area. This was just DUMB!

Follow Up From The Asbury Park Press:

Exchange student injured in roller-coaster accident has died, hospital confirms

A spokesman for Jersey Shore University Medical Center confirmed today that the 21-year-old Bulgarian exchange student critically injured Sunday evening by a boardwalk roller-coaster car had died.

"I can confirm at this time that the patient is deceased," said spokesman Rob

Cavanaugh at 5:15 p.m. Wednesday. "Out of respect for the family, I cannot release

anymore information at this time."

Cavanaugh could not release the specific day or time of death of Stanislav Nikolaev Dragnev of Pleven, Bulgaria, who had remained in critical condition at the hospital in Neptune since Sunday.

Despite hospital reports, as of Wednesday evening, Melvin Harmon, spokesman for The Council for International Educational Exchange, wrote in an e-mail "Stanislav Dragnev remains connected to life support systems at this time. CIEE staff are with his father at this time and Stanislav's condition remains unchanged. Unfortunately, I have no further information regarding the conflicting information you may have received from a hospital spokesperson."

This is too tragic, and I really do feel for this person. I think this accident can emphasize two points extremely well, however. The first is that when rides and parks mandate that certaing objects not be workn on rides, ie sunglasses, hats, other loose objects, those rules should be followed because the likelyhood of one of those objects getting stuck in the ride area from an outside source seems low. Secondly, when young people are running and riding rides, there is unfortunately going to be times when common sense is going to lose out to a gut reaction even for something as small as a hat or glasses, or something of the sort. The parks may need to spend just a bit more time emphasizing the importance of letting things go and making sure operators realize where people (both themselves and riders) should and should never be during ride operation. Not saying I blame the park, or a rider, or the operator for this happening solely, I just think that with the youth usually involved in some of these accidents its no surprise they happen so often.
