It was in McCall's Magazine which makes sense being the Pritzker family was tied to both the publication and the park.

That is Ned.

It’s interesting to read that the lockout gates between Safari sections were only going to handle three or four cars at a time. I remember the two sets of lockouts were three lanes wide and probably held about 45 cars at a time.

I remember when I first heard about Premier Parks going after Six Flags. At the time I laughed them off but when they sealed the deal I was shocked.

That’s true, only Rapids could wear shorts. The Rapids crew thought they were like GA royalty. You almost expected trumpets to blare when they entered the cafeteria.

It is sad that the Switliks lost all their personal belongings like that but they sort of forced Great Adventure’s hand as the article states.
I do think GA was kind when the house went up for auction. No other bidders made an offer so the park could’ve gotten the house for a steal but they paid the Switliks market value instead even though they didn’t have to.

I remember when these arcades were announced for 1982 the park proclaimed that they were going to contain the world’s largest assortment of Pac-Man machines. I don’t think that ever happened because the number that they did have was not impressive.

GA was really a pioneer in recycling. It must of been a proud moment when they were visited by Disney and the other parks for them to learn from Great Adventure.

I had forgotten how low the stock was when they announced Ka and the Golden Kingdom.

The Cardona family?
The submission said the late Hilda and Miguel Cardona. Do you know them?

I remember that everyone who rode the Looping Starship that day received a free “space themed” headband.

That one lasted for a long time. Not many left, at least not in NJ.

“Toned down” is such an accurate headline to describe the changes the park made in 1988. In addition to all the safety changes almost all the flat rides were slowed down including bumper cars that hardly moved and circular rides that probably were slowed to only two-thirds of the number of rpm’s the prior season. The Carousel and Musik Express were especially sluggish.

I remember that there was a ton of in park work that had to be done to accommodate the fair. Not only did it take up the front part of the parking lot, but it also included in park facilities in the Garden of Eatin as well as enclosing both bumper car rides for exhibits. Work started almost after Fourth of July and went on for weeks. Given the amount of effort, I’m not surprised that it didn’t last for more than two years.

How many people are in that Sky Ride car?

This was a horrible accident especially since it happened in front of guests.

Interesting to see the early name of the Safari as Maxwell’s Wild Preserve.

Assuming the photo on the right isn’t a stock image from 1974, the stripped Super Tepee can be seen without its canvas which was destroyed in a storm in winter 74/74.

Wow! The caption says that the main promenade will feature 50 shops! I would imagine most of those would have been smaller stands inside the tent structures. The park doesn't even have 50 shops today.

What a great set of vintage photos! Thanks for sharing these!

It did play on NY stations. I remember seeing it as a kid. I believe there is another version where she is riding the Flying Wave at the end.
