The Master
Looking back at the many years I have been going to GAdv, 1999 stands out as a year with so many changes at the park. The main change was all those War on Lines rides, Medusa the first floorless coaster. Adventure Rivers being replaced with Loony Tunes Seaport. Plus that year there was a major overhaul of FF and the first year of Dead Man's Party with no more Thiller shows in the indoor tent theater. 29yrswithaGApass
The anticipation leading up to the 1999 season was incredible. Visting the park on opening day was like waking up on Christmas morning. Around every corner of the park another present awaited!
JetsDevs4Lyf
I'm truly sorry I didn't get to experience this when it was new. It wasn't until around 2001 that I really began going to the park more often and by then the concept of the war on lines was pretty much gone it seemed like. I can only imagine how much everything had changed in that off-season for those of you who were going on opening day.
The Master
I remember all those War on Lines commercials being shown all the time on the local Philly stations back then. Funny thing is when Nitro opened up a couple years later there was almost nothing about it on the Philly stations, I have no idea if the NY staions had any ads for Nitro or not. redsoxfan0810
It's too bad I first went to the park in 2004! It would've been awesome to go in '99 with so many rides! Unfortunately half of those were gone by '03... Edited February 25, 2008 by redsoxfan0810
JetsDevs4Lyf
It's amazing to think that in the nine years since the War on Lines we have lost somewhere near twenty rides, especially when you consider we had upwards of around 72 rides and are now down in the fifties even with KK, ET, TDK, Nitro and S:UF all having been added after this major event took place. The Master
I know, besides removing most of the 1999 rides the park has also removed many classics as well. In 99 they also changed FF quite a bit. Before 99 the park was decorated all over but in 99 they started to decorate only key areas and leave other areas pretty much bare. Also that year a lot of the older FF decorations that used to be out in the midways were put in the hayride, only the new 1999 stuff was out in the midways. Now most of those 1999 FF decorations are gone or in really bad shape.
JetsDevs4Lyf
True. It seems like the 1999 "War" worked out similar to how most wars seem to. For a while it seems something positive is coming out of it and then suddenly it becomes clear that it did more harm then good. Not trying to sound preachy I'm just saying it's kind of interesting to see how the war on lines seemingly led to a bit of a downfall for the park. The Master
War on Lines is also when the park was adding a new coaster every two years. This was also when SF was buying Ma & Pa parks and updating them. SF probably thought it was okay to take flats out of GAdv and ship them to smaller parks since they were being replaced with a coaster. I think adding all those new coasters took a huge toll on the park besides the whole chain. They where spending millions on new coasters instead of keeping the rest of the park in good shape. They probably planned on not keeping all those 1999 flats for very long anyway. Edited February 26, 2008 by The Master
CoasterPete
This is the year I first began regularly visiting the park and was also my first Coaster Celebration year. It was exciting. The anticipation leading up to the season from all of the different drawings and renderings was immense. I even remember that a lot of enthusiasts had no idea(including myself) what a floorless coaster was because they first announced it as a "Heartline" coaster. It was very exciting and I don't think I'll ever feel that same sense of intense anticipation again in the near future at the park. The Master
Also I think such a influx of family rides then removing most of them probably ticked off alot of people at the park. Then all those coasters being built after WOLs really brought in the yahoo types for awhile. The park really did a big flip flop from the 1999 family flats to it's early 2000s coaster building craze. nbadude44
Three coasters opened that year: Medusa, Blackbeard, & Road Runner.
x Million Miles Away x
1999 was such an awesome year. I remember going on Medusa in the morning before it got crowded and riding 7 times in a row. However, I'm still upset that they put in so many awesome flat rides and then took them away within 4 years. Pendulum and Jumping Jack Flash were my two favorite rides at the park and I still miss them
PaulieGBones
I thought 1999 was ok. Seemed to me like it was more hype than anything. Most of the new rides weren't operating all the time because of lack of staffing. And then a lot of the new rides left after a few years with soem never reaching their potential at GA. Medusa was the greatest ride out of the 1999 season and I still love it to this day. I also liked Blackbeard's Lost Treasure Train. I'm just not sure I'd fit in it anymore. I gained a little weight over the last few years.
southview2
Concerning FF, recently, they have begun scaling back in decorations also, if you have noticed, this past years FF, the fountion cemetary was pushed back a foot or two for extra space, also, the past couple of years the hearse's have been in the lakefront cemtary instead of on mainstreet, that was also for traffic. Coaster Justin
If I had Decided it, The War on Lines Would've Been Like This: - Medusa (Frontier Adventures) - Blackbeard's Lost Treasure Train (Looney Tunes Seaport) - Twister (Lakefront) - Rodeo (Frontier Adventures) - Pendulum (Old Country) - Pirates Flight (Boardwalk) - Chaos (Fantasy Forest) - Looney Tunes Seaport (Except for Hand Cranks, Michigan J. Frogs Fun Flotilla, Roadrunner Express and Yosemite Sam Flight School)
SFGAdv10
I liked Spinnaker, I rode it once. But SFGA focuses on coasters and nothing else. Cedar Fair focuses on everything. I never want another War on Lines. I'd rather have flat packages. If they add 10 rides in 1 year I would want a Zerier Wave Swinger, A Star Flyer, Reopen Autobahn, Reopen Musik Express, An Intamin ZacSpin, A Huss Enterprise, A Huss Breakdance, An Intamin 2nd Generation Drop Tower, A scrambler, and an S&S Screamin' Swing.
