Hedgegoat
I hated that they just left it empty when they removed the Starship. Now the entrance is hidden behind bushes and fences just looking sad.
ThemeParkRider
Six Flags got into a bad habbit of doing that.
SFGAdv10
This ride looked really fun. Sadly I didn't get to ride it.
batmanrobinchiller
ooping Starship was never open when I went to the park because of under staffing....-.- And if it was open when I got to the boardwalk it closed down. I wish I was able to ride this ride!
Chiller
It was a really good classic ride when it was at the park.
29yrswithaGApass
An early photo is below of the Looping Starship (aka Space Shuttle) with the name Challenger still featured on its nose. The Challenger name was only on the ride for the 1985 season and removed after the real Challenger space shuttle exploded in early 1986, prior to the start of the '86 season. 29yrswithaGApass
This (along with the Evolution ride) upside down was always one of my favorite sights. Seeing that massive ride vehicle inverted and so high in the sky always impressed me.
dougdrummer
did it have a counterweight?
29yrswithaGApass
did it have a counterweight? A big old heavy one!
scott
This was one of my favorites when it was at the park. To see it upside down was cool to see but it was also fun to be on the ride when it was reaching the apex and hang for a bit. you wondered it you were going to make it over the hump or go back down and try again. dougdrummer
I figured that had to have a big counterweight.
scott
I figured that had to have a big counterweight. I think it looked even bigger then the ship was inverted and you had the loading area to use as a refference.
29yrswithaGApass
I think what made it really cool was that you didn't realize the ship had wings until it was inverted or getting inverted. During the loading process the wings were under the cantilevered loading and unloading platforms.
scott
That's a cool shot
29yrswithaGApass
The Challenger explosion happened 36 years ago today. It’s hard to believe it has been that many years. By the time the park opened for the ‘86 season the name Challenger on the front of the Looping Starship was covered up and not assigned a name of another shuttle.
