29yrswithaGApass
I can remember riding this ride several times at Great Adventure back in 1977. Since then I have only seen this type of ride one other time at Dinosaur Beach (Hunt's Pier) in Wildwood in the mid 90s. Roller Coaster Data Base does not list any US parks that currently feature this style of ride but I was wondering if anyone has seen any Alpen Blitz rides recently in a traveling fair? PaulieGBones
I only remember riding it once or twice back in the day. Still looks great. I wish they'd bring something like that back around.
29yrswithaGApass
The top two images below look like they COULD have been taken at Great Adventure. The trees, lampposts, benches, and small chain fencing are the same kind used at Great Adventure in the early 70s. The structure on the far left is unknown to me though. Anyone who recalls the area have an opinion if it's GA?
GAcoaster
I don't know...it looks like that might be the Snake House/Mad Hatter.
29yrswithaGApass
To add to the Alpen Blitz story, here are some photos of the ride after its removal in September of 1978 being stored next to the brand new Lightnin' Loops coaster. The site vacated by Alpen Blitz would become home to the first version of the Haunted Castle used during a 1978 Halloween event.

29yrswithaGApass
Did you know: Great Adventure was the first park in the United States to install an Alpen Blitz ride. It was introduced at Oktoberfest in Germany in the fall of 1975. Great Adventure followed the development and production of the ride for over a year and it was commissioned after a successful introduction and testing in Europe. GAcoaster
I just reformatted that spotlight page and thought about the pictures we need to add.
After seeing the vintage photo below, I am even further convinced that the upper left photo in the Schwarzkopf ad was taken at Great Adventure. Not only is that roof structure the same, but the lampposts immediately next to it appear to be the exact same style!
Daved Thomson
After seeing the vintage photo below, I am even further convinced that the upper left photo in the Schwarzkopf ad was taken at Great Adventure. Not only is that roof structure the same, but the lampposts immediately next to it appear to be the exact same style! Just to add my two cents on opinions of this... I would say that the picture was taken at Great Adventure. As you said the lamp posts and area look very similar. As for the structure in the upper left picture, it looks to me like it could be the back of the Swabinchin ride which would have been on the left as you walked past the entrance to Garden of Eating with the Alpen Blitz being on the right just before the entrance. 29yrswithaGApass
I believe the object in the upper left of the Schwarzkopf photo is the same object that is found to the right of the clown, just from the opposite side. It appears to be a small roofed structure - I would imagine the operator's booth for Alpen Blitz.

29yrswithaGApass
Did anyone catch this wide angle shot of Alpen Blitz in the Haunted House Spotlight? It is one of several views of Alpen Blitz that we recently received. Watch for an update to this Spotlight in the near future.
29yrswithaGApass
Here is a great find... an onboard photo of Great Adventure's Alpen Blitz train departing the station. Notice how close the steps are to the train and riders! They weren't kidding with the "Please keep hands on lap bar" sign!
ThemeParkRider
Do you think that would still be legal to the safety rules today?
batmanrobinchiller
^Oh that's definitely illegal now a days!
29yrswithaGApass
Do you think that would still be legal to the safety rules today? Well, even if the state approved it (which I doubt they would) I am sure the park's insurance company and lawyers would have an issue with it! 29yrswithaGApass
Recently discovered, a rare press kit photo of the Alpen Blitz coaster from 1976!
29yrswithaGApass
This photo of the Alpen Blitz cars is from early spring 1978. It leads to the question of whether the cars are heading back into the park or out of it and did the coaster actually operate in 1978? The ride was definitely removed by September 1978. GAcoaster
I love the way Schwarzkopf ride cars are so similar. Same lap bars, seats, lights, diamond plate-- whether it's Alpen Blitz, Calypso, Monster Spin, even Joust-A-Bout.
