29yrswithaGApass
Photo #1 - July 1, 2012: July 1, 1974 After just four short months of construction, Great Adventure opened its gates to the public for the first time on July 1st, 1974. The timeline to build the park was so short that the western area, then known as Rootin' Tootin' Rip Roarin', was still being completed. batmanrobinchiller
Do i see the uphill bump on log flumne?! Yup! Apparently, that bump was removed due to safety reasons.
gasmspiritblue
Why does the lake look so dirty? The parking lot looks so small! Edited July 3, 2012 by gasmspiritblue
GAcoaster
The original parking lot was smaller, but it was also divided with wooded areas to break things up. The lake often gets really muddy like that after it rains, and apparently there was a lot of rain just before opening day.
gafreak
i saw an article where one of the log flume boats flipped over, was that due to the uphill bump?
GAcoaster
From what I understand it was actually in the spillway at the end where it turns into the station. The water level was too high (which is why it now has metal rails and holes to drain off water).
29yrswithaGApass
Photo #2 - July 8, 2012: March 1978 Soon after acquiring Great Adventure, Six Flags began a park-wide campaign of enhancements and upgrades. The Skyride received a complete makeover with repainted stations, gondolas, and support columns, as well as a new sponsor - Delta Airlines. gasmspiritblue
I have never seen a picture of orange columns, and the station it looks cool!!
Yankees99
Miss the different color gondolas. In the background, two of the best flat rides appear. Delta flies you to...Atlanta, New York, Boston, Philadelphia, etc. When we walked along Dream Street or down by the lake to cool off, we'd always look up at the cable cars and see what city was listed underneath. Man, those were the days!
29yrswithaGApass
I have never seen a picture of orange columns, and the station it looks cool!! The orange on the columns is just a primer coat of paint to get it from dark (tree) green to the muted green still seen today. However, at one point the Dream Street Station was painted pumpkin orange.
Yankees99
I'll take one of those grape drinks right now. Those were the best on those humid summer days.
29yrswithaGApass
^Photo #3 - July 14, 2012: July 1981 A bucket of popcorn, a box of soft pretzels, Italian ice, Juice Sippers, Icee's, Dr.Pepper, and a Coke - all classic snacks from the summer of 1981! I'll take one of those grape drinks right now. Those were the best on those humid summer days.
29yrswithaGApass
Photo #4 - July 23, 2012: April 1974 The very first attraction built at Great Adventure was the Round-Up ride. It was assembled and in place before any concrete was poured and before any electrical service was available.
Yankees99
Amazing. I mean, absolutely amazing. One of my all-time favorite rides and one that was underrated even back in the day. On another note, this "photo of the week" is becoming my favorite part of this site. Please keep them coming!
gasmspiritblue
Wow i never knew that!! This was my dad's home ride, he oped it in the 80's he will love to know this was the most anxious ride to be built!!
GAcoaster
It made me a little sad when we saw Wonder Woman Lasso of Truth at MM and noticed it still goes up as high as the Super Round Up used to.

GAcoaster
I believe that was one of the changes they made in the safety sweep in 1988.
29yrswithaGApass
Photo #5 - July 29, 2012: May 1974 Traffic Jam was installed in 1974 and was the first of six bumper cars at the park including two kiddie and four adult sized rides. The latest version is this year's new Fender Benders opening in August.
gafreak
i think one of those style cars is underneath the station for batman the ride, you can see it in the roll up door as you go up the hill for nitro
