Dennis
Hello, I am Dennis and was part of the opening team when we opened GA in 1974. Hard to believe it has been 35 years. It was quite an "adventure" getting it open that year! I don't think many of the opening team are still at the park, but if they are, it would be good to see them at the reunion this year. 29yrswithaGApass
Welcome Dennis ! If you have any stories or photos from opening year we would love to hear and see them! What job did you have in 1974?
Dennis
Welcome Dennis ! If you have any stories or photos from opening year we would love to hear and see them! What job did you have in 1974? I was one of the three operations managers (Doug Whitley, Jack Lucas, Dennis Gilbert) working under Jim Romine, Director of Operations and Rodney Chandler, Asst Director. As I recall in those days (lot of years and parks since to blur the memory), Operations was tolls, parking, admissions, Guest Services, Grounds/Janitorial and Ride Operatons. The five of us had all come up from Georgia, where at one time or another, we had worked at Six Flags Over Georgia. This was obviously before Six Flags became involved in GA. I am sure there are many stories that will come to mind, but one that is stuck in my mind forever is on opening day, we still were pouring concrete in the Western section of the park and as the first guests were coming in, we were laying plywood sheets over the wet concrete so the guests could walk in that area. Will check and see what pictures I could scan in from the opening year.
29yrswithaGApass
^ That's great stuff Dennis! Thanks. I know most of Rootin' Tootin' Rip Roarin' (Best of the West), including the rides, wasn't ready for opening day. If I am not mistaken, folks still needed to make it back to the Great Arena for the shows, right? Any photos you can share would be fantastic! Dennis
that is correct. We had to get them back for the signature shows in the arena.
CycloneMan
I guess I'll come out now Basically everyone here knows me, but anyway, I'm Dainan. I'm certified in section 230 and my home ride is Rolling Thunder. I'm new to the whole game and still in training. But as of now, I've attended Rolling Thunder, and I have a feeling I'll be there a lot this year =)
LaZz
So I'm Adam, you may know me from Online, but I'll follow Dainan's post here and give you a brief background on myself. I was a former lead in ride operations during the 04' and 05' season. I was in charge of Rolling Thunder and Houdinis, but on some days also was in charge of both 220 and 230. Here are the rides I was trained on. If anybody wants to know any information on a few, shoot me a PM, I'll be glad to answer some questions. The information is still fresh in my head. Call it Six Flags "brain wash" . -Rolling Thunder -Rodeo Stampede -Tazz Twister -Kiddie Carousel -Tea Cups -Carousel -Houdinis Great Escape -Big Wheel -Fantasy Fling -Buccaneer -Log Flume -Mine Train -Medusa -Kingda Ka

29yrswithaGApass
So how many times have you gotten to the back of the train, realized a lapbar was still up, and had to start checking from the front of the train again?
CycloneMan
Never! I'm good about checking the train =) But there's been a couple of occasions, where I've checked the train and as I got to seat, realized that the guest was sitting on his seat belt... oops
LaZz
The unloader is suppose to make sure all the lapbars are able to go down as they are making their way to the front of the train. As in move them to make sure they aren't locked. Obviously that don't happen quite as much anymore...

LaZz
Well that is good. I have not been on it this season yet. Every time I go the lines are insane. But yea, I miss working for the park but I have moved on to bigger and better things in life.
