GAcoaster
This was one of my favorite rides! Maybe some of our Ride Ops people can answer-- how long did the Calypso car get used in the training room for demos? I remember having to go through attendant training with that car for a couple of seasons (along with Loretta Lap Child)

Yankees99
Wow! What a ride. What fun. Brings back plenty of great memories watching that short video. One of my favorites. Remember riding Calypso often during that time of the day and looking into the late-afternoon sun. Please keep those old-school ride photos/videos coming our way. Yoshi
I never had a chance to try the ride but it looks like a lot of fun and I wish it was still at the park.
GAcoaster
I remember it was always gettign re-decked with all the wood slats which must have cost a fortune along with other maintenance. I'm guessing they purchased it used because it seemed old even when it was new. The same ride at Great America (which was built just a year or two later) featured completely different cars with automatic lap bars (same cars that were on Monster Spin). 29yrswithaGApass
The Great America parks purchased the "futuristic space themed" version of the ride which was also higher capacity with 25 cars grouped in five sets of five. scipiomask
Nice! I loved this ride over at the Point. Now, let's get rolling on that other spotlight that you said would get thunderous applause....

Railer
I used to love this ride. I don't remember the original lighted "flower" in the middle of it though. I remember the little "caps" in the middle of all the arm's and the center. I always wanted to ride it sitting on one of them when I was a kid. 29yrswithaGApass
Now, let's get rolling on that other spotlight that you said would get thunderous applause.... That's still the plan... RT is our next major Spotlight. We are putting on the finishing touches now!

29yrswithaGApass
The headlight on the front of the cars made for a cool light show at night. I especially liked how the beams of light illuminated the trees behind the ride.
Thunderbolt
This was one of my favorite rides! One of my all time personal favorites as well! It's a shame the ride was seemingly scrapped. Boardwalk and Baseball had a "Calypso" too which I was fortunate enough to ride as a young child. Its theming package resembled the Schwarzkopf spec card Harry posted.
GAcoaster
This and the Monster Spin both had unique sounds that I always remember. This one always clattered as the wooden planks rattled as the ride spun.
29yrswithaGApass
For your viewing pleasure, two shots of the Calypso from 1976. The ride was relocated in 1976 from next to the Super RoundUp to the current location of the Remote Boats between the Buccaneer and Panda Express. 29yrswithaGApass
This is a nice photo from June 1977 of the Calypso after a new set of non-skid panles were applied to a newly painted platform.

29yrswithaGApass
I just updated this spotlight with a newly confirmed interesting tidbit. The oversized superstructure at the center of the Calypso ride lasted at Great Adventure for only one season. In the 1974/75 off-season it was removed and replaced with a simple cap by the start of the park's second season.
