29yrswithaGApass
I'll say it again, you learn something new every day! Take a look at the following photos of the Log Flume from the 1970's. At closer examination, check out the incredible dip in the track that was featured after the ride's third drop. The logs (and water!) use to travel uphill, and not on one of the ride's two conveyer lifts! This was removed, with the track flattened into a straight run-out by 1980. I would imagine it was hard to maintain and an issue spot with the operations of the Log Flume. Still, really cool nonetheless!
ThemeParkRider
Wow! I guess I can understand why nobody remembered it! That would be really cool to have now!
Railer
Wow!!!! The "basin" is huge too, How didn't anyone notice it all these years? I guess it had to have Pumps to shoot the water up the little hill, or it was pumped up when it leveled out again. Great discovery, right under our Nose's. You will have to re-do the Spotlight, and try to find out more about this "lost" feature.
29yrswithaGApass
^ Luckily we didn't do the Log Flume Spotlight yet. I discovered this pulling together information for it. I always liked the Log Flume, but this dip feature makes the ride even better! Too bad it was removed.
Railer
That was sort of ahead of it's time. I thought the "Log Flume" Spotlight was done already, I am "slipping", getting old. Hopefully you can find some better, up close, shot's of it.
CoasterPrince
Is this where the small drop after the 1st drop is? It's barely a drop, more like an indent.
Yankees99
I remember that original part of the flume. Other than the final drop, that track dip was the best part of the ride. Great discovery! Looking forward to the Spotlight on the Flume - always the backbone to the "Western Section."
scipiomask
Actually, I know a little more on this. My friend's dad used to run the log flume. He wasn't paying attention and he let a few logs pile up in the dip and that's part of the reason they got rid of it.
gafreak
great find!
Yoshi
It's too bad they removed it, the uphill section on Splash Mountain is awesome and although the uphill section on Saw Mill was probably smaller it would have been fun to still have it. 29yrswithaGApass
Is this where the small drop after the 1st drop is? It's barely a drop, more like an indent. It was the third drop of the ride (the first being the small drop after the first lift). The third drop now looks like this: And a wide angle shot of the ride's back track: (click to enlarge)
The Master
That is a good find, it explains that big basin under that drop. I first noticed that basin a few years back when an old FF Terror Trail went right by it. I would say the inertia of the falling logs was enough for them to go up over that hill. It could have been rough or just cheaper to remove it. Edited February 26, 2011 by The Master
29yrswithaGApass
I have always thought of Great Adventure's Log Flume as one of the best flume rides anywhere. The Log Flume with that dip must have been extraordinary! Oddly, I rode it several times in the 70's - usually once per visit because of the huge line, but I don't recall the dip. 29yrswithaGApass
After learning about the dip in the Log Flume track, the 1974 park map drawing of the ride seems a little more accurate now!
gafreak
next time i go on the flume, ill have to looks for signs of it being switched!
GAcoaster
I just did a little research and apparently Kennywood's Log Jammer flume has the same element (built by Arrow in 1975): You can see it at :20 in this video:
The Master
I am guessing Kennywood's flume still has the dip? Wonder why GAdv took their dip out for? You can see the left side bank of were the dip was is really overgrown now. Edited February 27, 2011 by The Master
Great Adventurer
What a discovery! I'm sure it would be a pain if a log happened to get stuck in there, but that's something else! One of the things that never ceases to amaze me is how these rides are able to consistently let gravity do the work. It's amazing!
ericthewanderer
Is there any way they could replace the missing dip?It could be the "big new thing" for 2012.....
ThemeParkRider
That would be big, but perhaps not big enough. I would like to see that with a little TLC to the rest of the ride, too. I like getting bumped around a few times on the ride, but its so bumpy! Anyway, that seems like it would've been fun to ride, just a little dangerous. TOPGUN1993
(Notice the uphill section) http://themeparkreview.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=56015&start=240 Some interesting photos on here, including "Ultra Twister"
29yrswithaGApass
Nice find! You can see from the photo below how Busch altered their flume too. The dips must have been more troubles than they were worth.
warnerleroy
the trough were you would fall is still there and now holds the supports on the new track, but the original track section is stillthere for the most part
