29yrswithaGApass
As stated in our Spotlight, before the Parachutes there was a pond!
GAcoaster
A pond that was full of mosquitoes! My dad used to have to park there overnight and each morning he'd come home and the car would be covered in bug spray from the pest control team. ThemeParkRider
Did your Dad have a job at the park? Anyway, I like the parachutes much better then a pond... yuk!
GAcoaster
Yeah, he worked in Cash Control overnights back when the Admin Offices and Cash Control were over there. Cash Control was moved across the park the year after the Admin Building did and the old CC building became the Games office for the newly expanded Games area. gafreak
anyone else notice the seats on the @ yellow chutes are missing?
scipiomask
anyone else notice the seats on the @ yellow chutes are missing? I did notice that, actually. I was wondering about how it would feel to ride the parachutes hanging from the anvil that's holding the parachute down.
ThemeParkRider
Whoa.... Does anyone notice the Parachutes seem a lot faster on their descent?
29yrswithaGApass
I've been going through and scanning a ton of my oldest park stuff. I ran across this masterpiece I made in 1983 of Parachtuer's Perch. It was amazing what you could do back in the day with an Apple IIe ! 29yrswithaGApass
Here are a couple of souvenirs from Six Flags Over Mid America featuring our parachute ride when it was known as Sky Chuter.
ThemeParkRider
You know, it would be nice to have our Parachutes fly above trees. Not that I don't like the view as it is, but I think a forest underneath would be cool.
gafreak
i cant wait to go up and see the layout of GL, in the pics harry took, it looks monstrous compaired to the entry canopy!
The Master
An odd thing I noticed about the parachute tower in recent years is that it has large floodlights mounted up top, but the park only seems to turn them on for FF. I don't think I ever seen them lit during the summer.

It was great when the park was a forrest, but trees are the enemy of Six Flags.
ThemeParkRider
They are now! Yeah, I guess you're right. At least they didn't keep the name "The Enchanted Forest".

Chiller
2012 - New Flat Ride Package or Medium Thrill Ride - Rumor - (6/14/11) Yesterday we talked about a possible flat ride package in the works for Six Flags Great Adventure, though now I’m told that is just one of a couple of possible plans under consideration. Another plan is to bring in a Sky Screamer style ride (Star Flyer) as we’ve seen already become instant hits at Six Flags St. Louis and Discovery Kingdom this summer. While they could drop this ride in just about anywhere, there is one rumor claiming that they may consider removing the old parachute tower for it as well, but again… nothing is confirmed. Just ideas being thrown around at this point, so stay tuned. Screamscape posted a rumor that the Parachute Training Center may be removed for a Sky Screamer ride. The parachute are one of my favorite non roller coaster rides in the park. If removing a ride is what it takes to get more flats, then I could do without a new ride. 29yrswithaGApass
I think we may see the Parachute ride "reimagined" before removed. The column can be used for an observation tower, swing tower, drop tower, or something completely new. A conversion would cost much less than a completely new installation. It even has examples of it on Intamin's Website:
ThemeParkRider
I'd rather have the regualr parachutes, but if it is going to be removed as a ride at all, I would much rather see parts of the attraction live on within another ride. The Master
They should keep the Parachutes and install a Star Flyer where the Tee Pee used to be.
Thunderbolt
Six Flags would be stupid to remove a true family friendly ride like "Parachuter's Perch". It's a unique gentle experience that's largely extinct in the park. Come to think of it, Shapiro 2.0 will probably remove it based on its labor intensive operation. I'm still smarting over "The Golden Kingdom". A Zierer Wave Swinger is more desirable than a "Star Flyer". One enhances the overall ambience and is family friendly. The other is a "Star Flyer". gafreak
if they removed it, id be pretty upset, its a park staple like thunder, i dont think they should mess with it,
Yankees99
Don't recall what year it was, but Knott's Berry Farm had a parachute ride that closed down. They still have a sky cabin that goes up to the top and circles around. I agree that would be cool for Parachuter's Perch to have a sky cabin, too. Good idea, 29!
